TPT CEO Visit Saldanha to discuss Red Dust
On Tuesday 19 December, the West Coast Business Chamber, Red Dust Action group and a few home owner representatives had a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of TPT, Ms Nozipho Sithole to discuss the ongoing Red Dust problem and the failed house painting project.
This is the first time that anyone on this level from TPT was willing to travel to Saldanha to look us in the eyes on this very urgent issue. The meeting started with Ms Sithole explaining that they investigated best practices around the world to counter the dust pollution in order to get to a permanent solution to the problem. The meeting was then updated on the state of the projects completed and still in process to solve the pollution.
It was agreed that an integrated air quality monitoring body will be established along the lines of the “Saldanha Bay Water Quality Forum Trust”, in order to get an objective report on the state of air in the area and to independently do peer reviews on progress of the TPT of the projects in place, and how well the processes are being followed. TPT will make an amount of money available to this trust to be utilised by the trust for projects which will solve the public’s problems, i.e. painting of houses.
Finally we agreed that the Red Dust Action group will arrange another public meeting around this subject during which we can discuss the progress made and the way forward. This meeting will probably happen towards the end of January 2018.
